Decorating Cupcakes with Chef Dana
The art of icing can be perceived as something that's very easy. I watch many people on television make it look so simple, they do it so gracefully. Me on the other hand, if I ever have to put icing on anything I'm using my trusty spatula and I just slather it on whatever cake I make. It may not look great, but at least it tastes good!
On January 16th , I joined Chef Dana Herbert at his bakery in Newark Delaware. I was excited to visit! He was hosting a cupcake decorating class and luckily he was able to squeeze me in as one of the students. We were going to learn how to pipe icing with 3 different tips. Chef Dana also provided six cupcakes per person to decorate. The cupcake flavors were chocolate, vanilla, creamsicle, funfetti, red velvet and cookies & cream.
Class began and Chef Dana showed everyone how to cut the tip of their piping bags before placing the tips on. I've never done piping before, so I had to get used to holding and squeezing it. After a couple attempts of trying to make my cupcake look halfway appealing, I finally found a tip that actually worked well for me. I had a ball using the rose tip. I was proud of myself! I ended up decorating most of my cupcakes with pretty rose petals. Thanks to Chef Dana for being an excellent instructor, I made some cupcakes that brought a smile to my face.
Learning how to decorate cupcakes was quite relaxing and very fun. It was kind of a stress reliever for myself. Plus, I got to learn from a TLC Next Great Baker winner, totally awesome! Keep an eye open for future cupcake decorating classes. These are great for kids and also adults. I promise you'll have a wonderful experience.
