On the first Sunday of March, I attended a brunch hosted at a lovely new restaurant in Jenkintown Pennsylvania, Southern Belle (located at 700 West Ave Jenkintown, PA 19046). Once I entered the door, I immediately felt like I walked into a classic southern restaurant. From the wooden tables to the vintage-like prints on the pillows that lined the seats around the room. The decor made you feel at home. I was excited to experience everything that Chef Tim Thomas would have in store for our visit.
Brunch began with Sweet Potato Muffins paired with sweet molasses butter. The muffins were moist and fluffy. The butter was the perfect spread. You could really taste the molasses which I loved. Afterwards we moved on to the next course. We were served Hush Puppies in a sweet corn purée. I enjoyed these very much. The outer texture had just the right crisp with flakiness. Inside, it was moist and the flavor/seasoning of the hush puppies were delicious. The sweet corn purée was the icing on the cake for this course. It added color and a lot of flavor to the dish.
The room was filled with a beautiful group of people. There were bloggers, local influencers and business owners in attendance. Lots of great conversations were had. Dining is so much fun when you're sharing a wonderful meal with such wonderful people. Everyone also enjoyed their own bottle of choice as Southern Belle is a BYOB establishment. As for myself, I had a couple of mimosas.
It was time for the third course. We were served Blue Crab Deviled Eggs. Only one word could describe them....FANTASTIC! I've always had a love for deviled eggs. The added crab just sent me through the roof! There isn't a thing I would change about them, loved them. I just wish I could've taken my own tray of them back home with me! Next up was a more heavier dish, Fish and Grits. The fish was fried perfectly, had a fresh taste and it wasn't greasy at all. The grits were creamy and delicious. This was one of the best fish & grits dishes I've ever tasted. Everyone can't cook good grits, but Chef Thomas did them right.
As the amount of room that I had left in my stomach was running out, I had to make space for the last dish. The final entree was a Chicken Sausage & Shrimp tater tot hash with tomatoes and cheese topped with an egg. Everything in this dish blended perfectly well together. I felt like the sausage added so much flavor to the hash. It made me feel like I was eating a true home cooked meal made with love. This dish along with the fish and grits seemed to be top favorites of the afternoon.
Overall, my experience at Southern Belle was awesome. Chef Thomas was very hospitable and I thank him for opening up his restaurant to everyone who attended the brunch. His food certainly showed his talent and love for cooking. I wish him a ton of success with Southern Belle! It's a wonderful addition to the Montgomery County food scene.
