Mama's Meatballs and Pizzeria
I recently had a chance to venture over to Pennsauken New Jersey to check out Mama’s Meatballs and Pizzeria located at 2673 Haddonfield Road, Pennsauken NJ. Joseph and Katherine Argento are owners of this brick and mortar and they also own a food truck as well. This spot is known for their amazing meatballs and pizza. Their meatballs are so good, they were voted Best of Philly for best meatballs in 2018!
One thing that makes Mama’s Meatballs & Pizzeria stand out from other pizzerias is they use a pizza dough made with Italian standard flour. The process they use in making their dough takes about an hour and then sits for about 48hrs before it gets used for making pizza. They use this method because it makes it more digestible, it has a more complex flavor and it makes the pizza a little more crispy. It’s a more tedious method, but the outcome is well worth it. Their sauce is made daily by grinding tomatoes with sea salt, basil and olive oil.
Another thing that stands out about Mama’s Meatballs is the cheesesteaks. They use fresh rib eye which comes from a butcher in South Philly on 9th Street that has been in business for 117 years. Joseph Argento also makes the seeded rolls fresh early every morning himself. He aims to use ingredients from local vendors that are high quality and it really makes a difference in the end.
I chose to try their grandma style pizza with sausage and basil toppings, one cheesesteak and the Rabe Father Meatball sandwich. The pizza, OMG, what can I say! It was EXCELLENT! One thing I could immediately taste was the quality in the sauce and most definitely the crust. I’m not a fan of sauce sometimes because a lot of places just don’t get it right. Plus, it gives me indigestion lol. Mama’s definitely knows how to make a damn good pizza. Everything from the cheese, the crust and the sauce was just perfect. Now, let me tell you about this cheesesteak! Goodness, I was impressed. I know they’re known for their meatballs but you gotta make sure you get a cheesesteak as well if you ever stop by. I ordered mine with American cheese and cheez wiz with fried onions and mayo. The roll was soft with a slight crisp, it was so fresh. You can also taste the quality in the rib eye meat. This was one hefty and delicious cheesesteak. I can’t wait to go back for another one! Lastly, I got to try the Rabe Father meatball sandwich. It’s made with turkey, broccoli rabe and asiago cheese. It was prepared Big Mama Style which is topped with sauce, arugula, peppers, onions and parmesan. The meatballs were juicy, large, flavorful and delicious. I can see why they won Best of Philly!
I want to give a huge thank you to Joseph over at Mama’s Meatballs for his amazing hospitality. He was very down to earth and super informative when it came to explaining everything about the business, down to the steps that they take to make sure they produce nothing but top notch quality food. Please visit them if you ever get a chance, it’ll be worth the trip!
