Mad Rex - Philly's Post Apocalyptic Spot for Food and Fun!
Max Rex is a very unique restaurant that has been in business for about three months now. It's located in Fishtown, a Philly neighborhood where the restaurant scene has been booming. This restaurant features a virtual reality lounge and the decor makes you feel like you're right in post apocalyptic times! There's a little over 220 seats here. The bar has a nice amount of room, so you don't really have to worry about being cramped if you have to stand. I feel like it's an awesome place to pick for a night out with a group of friends.
A VIP preview night was held the first week in October. I sampled three cocktails that evening. The first one was the Second Sight. This contained gin, herb honey, simple syrup, elderflower liqueur, Pom juice and fresh lemon juice. The second cocktail sampled was the Scorched Earth. This was made with rye whiskey, orange liquer, orange juice, Campari, ginger simple syrup and the rim was spiced. The third cocktail I had was called the Mehmet. This drink took it up a few notches. It consisted of apple infused bourbon, cider vinegar, apple cider, cinnamon simple syrup with a hint of hot sauce and bitters. I don't really drink a lot of bourbon, but I thought this was pretty good.
After a few drinks, it was time to experience a few items on the menu. The Black Rock was presented. This is an item on, what is called, the Survivor Menu. It comes with a piping hot black rock that can reach up to 500 degrees! On this, you cook your choice of protein: beef, chicken and fish (tuna steak or salmon). Two dipping sauces are provided that pair well with each choice of meat and one side item is also included with the Survivor Menu. I had fun cooking on the black rock. I like my steak cooked medium, so I made sure it was still a little pink. It had nice flavor and it was very tender. I also enjoyed the salmon too. After I was done, it was time to choose a dessert. I went with the Berry Parfait. It was a sweet and lighter choice. A perfect ending to my dining experience.
